Virginija Pievos – Tolumėla, CD
Digipak CD. 波罗的海民谣。
Virginija Pievos is well known singer and musician in Lituanian scene, performing poetic music for more than 20 years and well known for her outstanding rich voice. After her folk rock band Pievos (eng. Meadows) made their last stage performance in 2016, Virginija continued her own musical path as multiinstrumentalist and is back with a new solo project - looping and droning postfolk, darkened melodies with shamanic groove.
"Tolumėla" is a dialectal word from North-eastern Lituania meaning "distance", "far away". The album presents 10 compositions, based on ancient folk songs, with all music and arrangements composed by Virginija, also her own folk-like lyrics for a song "Gegiūla". Being very intuitive, devoted and melancholic the album also involves sounding of raw drones and acoustic rock, surprising with a new alternative approach to Baltic native music.
Many Viginija's songs came from just playing with looping effects and voice processors, making new layers with various instruments and singing melodies that come to mind. This enchanting devotion came very naturally and fluently. Later dictophone recorded versions were rearranged at home studio, with kind assistance from famous Lituanian musician Donatas Bielkauskas.
As album's title songs "Oi toli toli" and "Saulala raudona" suddenly catched a lot of attention from listeners and music media, it apparently should be a great discovery of Baltic post-folklore music in 2020!
